Dear women,
I am Helena, aka Šibabi, and I have great news for you! You no longer have to wonder how to accurately transfer a pattern onto fabric. In this article, you'll learn everything you need to know, whether you're a beginner or already have some experience. You'll be clear on which method to choose for different types of fabrics and projects. And most importantly, you'll save a lot of time and nerves!
I'm sure you know the feeling...
You're looking forward to sewing, but then you realize you've traced the pattern inaccurately and nothing fits. Argh, that's frustrating! 😤 Or are you struggling with disappearing marks and don't know what to do? Don't worry, after reading this article, you'll be a pro at pattern transfer! 💪
I'll tell you about various methods, such as using tailor's chalk, soap, a tracing wheel, or tailor's tacks. And I'll show you tricks to avoid mistakes and achieve perfect results. So let's get started!
Sublimation marker 🖍️
A sublimation marker is a super modern tool for those of you who, like me, hate the feeling of chalk in your hand. Sublimation markers are usually purple or pink and can be bought at any specialty fabric and haberdashery store. Just in case, I'm including a link.
- The sublimation marker disappears on its own after 12 - 24 hours
- But it's good to have an eraser too
- I use them on light and patterned fabrics; on darker ones like black, they are almost invisible.
TIP: Don't want to buy expensive markers? Buy any washable children's markers, and you're all set! :-ú

Tailor's chalk - a classic that never disappoints 🖍️
Tailor's chalk is a staple among marking tools. It's easy to use and suitable for most fabrics. But be careful, it can leave marks on some fabrics. Here are my tips for working with it:
- Choose the right chalk color according to the fabric
- Make marks gently so as not to damage the material
- After tracing, lightly iron the pattern to set the marks
With chalk, you'll achieve precise lines and won't have trouble even with more complex patterns. And once you're done, you can simply brush off or wash away the marks. Easy peasy! 😊
You can buy it here, for example:

Tailor's soap - a clever helper not just for the bathroom 🧼
Another popular option is tailor's soap. It's practical, easy to handle, and unlike chalk, it doesn't stain as much. How to use it?
- Lightly moisten the soap to leave a mark on the fabric
- Trace the pattern and let the soap dry
- If the lines merge a bit, it's okay - the soap washes off easily
With soap, you can easily handle even delicate and dark fabrics. And you know what's best? You don't have to worry about the marks disappearing during fittings or ironing. They stay put like they're glued!
Tracing wheel - the perfect tool for demanding projects ✂️
When you need truly precise lines and are planning something big, reach for a tracing wheel. A tracing wheel is a toothed wheel that allows you to easily transfer a pattern onto fabric quickly and without mess.
- You apply pressure to the tracing wheel, and it leaves a perforated path on the fabric, which you then follow with scissors
- Thanks to the tracing wheel, you can even trace a pattern from your favorite t-shirt using the reverse method.

Tips for perfect pattern transfer 🎯
Finally, I have a few universal tips for you that will make pattern transfer a breeze:
1. Before you start, iron your fabric or smooth it with your hands so it's flat, without creases or distortions.
2. For more complex patterns, number or label pattern pieces with symbols so you know what's what. Or just label them directly.
3. If the pattern shifts while you're tracing, it's better to start over.
4. Pin the pattern to the fabric or tape it in a few places so it doesn't move.
And if something doesn't go right, don't despair! Practice makes perfect, and you'll soon figure out which method suits you best. Don't be afraid to try new things and experiment. You might just find your dream marking method! 😉
Conclusion: You'll master it in no time! 🙌
