How much does it cost to start manufacturing and selling children's clothing?

Manufacturing and selling children's clothing can be a wonderful business idea – new babies are constantly being born and growing, and parents are always looking for new, quality pieces. Moreover, these are often smaller items than women's apparel and are easier to produce.

At the same time, there are several factors that influence how much it will actually cost you to get started. Let's look at the main cost items, what to watch out for, and how to proceed smartly to be ready to start selling without incurring unnecessary expenses right from the start.

1. Basic Equipment: Sewing Machine and Other Tools

  • Sewing machine:

    • To start, you will need a quality machine that can handle various types of stitches and materials (e.g., knits, sweatshirt fabric). Prices range from approximately CZK 5,000 for a basic model to tens of thousands for professional industrial machines. You will need this machine for topstitching, edgestitching, and finishing, as well as for sewing on labels, appliques, and securing stitches.
    • An essential tool for sewing children's clothing for sale is also an overlock machine (typically a 4-thread for knits, sweatshirt fabrics) or a coverstitch machine. These specialize in elastic stitches and finishing seams, which is ideal for children's clothing. These machines also range from CZK 5,000 to CZK 12,000.

  • Tools and accessories:

    • Scissors (quality tailor's scissors, approx. CZK 300–600), tape measure, pins, machine needles for various materials, rulers (a patchwork ruler is sufficient for cutting straight lines), and other small items such as disappearing ink pens for drawing, etc.
    • A quality basic set of tools will cost you around CZK 1,000–2,000.

Tip: If you are a complete beginner, it's worth investing in a simpler but reliable machine and tools. A professional machine can be purchased later once sales pick up. But remember that you need to be professional from the start, and your products must be technically excellent.

2. Materials and Patterns

  • Fabrics:

    • For children's clothing, cotton knits, sweatshirt fabrics, bamboo, and occasionally softshell or merino for functional pieces are most commonly used.
    • The price per meter varies by quality, design, and composition. For knits, expect to pay around CZK 150 - 200 per meter; for specialized fabrics (e.g., merino), it can easily be CZK 400/m or more. However, we are assuming wholesale prices; retail prices will, of course, be much higher.
    • To start, a small amount of fabric will suffice. You can easily begin with just one roll of fabric and create a beautiful, cohesive collection.
  • Patterns:

    • You can buy pre-made patterns (usually CZK 100–300 for a digital version) or create your own (which requires experience and time). With purchased patterns, it's essential to check the license. For example, I provide a license to small creators as part of a subscription. You can find information here.
    • If you plan custom creations based on your own ideas, pattern costs are minimized, but you invest more time in construction and testing. And time is money.

Tip: Always buy fabrics from manufacturers or wholesale dealers to avoid situations where demand for products increases, and you can no longer replenish stock. Also, ensure you have the necessary certifications. Here you can find a webinar on certifications for children under 3 years old.

3. Time and Skills: A Hidden Investment

  • Sewing courses:

    • If you are not an experienced sewer, it's worth investing in detailed courses and tutorials that will help you gain the necessary high-level skills. For example, I offer a course called "We Sew for Baby".
    • Investing in education will help you avoid unnecessary material and time waste, ultimately reducing your costs.
  • Pattern work and testing:

    • Every new model must be tested, sizes optimized, and several prototypes sewn. This takes time and requires finding some enthusiastic collaborators who will test the models with you. This way, you can iron out all defects before launching sales.
    • This "behind-the-scenes time" is often underestimated but is crucial for offering a quality final product, not a half-finished one. However, don't prolong it too much. You'll never have a truly final product, and I guarantee you'll revise it a hundred more times.

Tip: If you have a limited budget, learn from free resources – YouTube tutorials, DIY blogs, Facebook sewing groups, etc. The time investment is higher, but you save money. Sometimes, though, it's not worth it.

4. Legislation and Formalities

  • Trade License:

    • For legal sale of children's clothing, you need a trade license (free trade – Textile Manufacturing). Nothing extra is needed.
    • The administrative fee for reporting a trade is CZK 1,000, and for subsequent changes, it's CZK 500. Therefore, I recommend filling out all possible related activities (e.g., selling courses, photography, etc.), even if you don't plan anything like that now. It doesn't hurt, and if you ever want to do any of these, you'll save money.
  • Product labeling:

    • Children's clothing should include information on composition, care symbols, and possibly certifications, firmly attached to the product – labels sewn into seams.
    • You can have labels printed (approx. CZK 1-5/piece depending on quantity), for example, on satin. Always consider whether the label will irritate your customers and if it can be easily removed.
  • Taxes, Accounting:

    • Consider simplified accounting or tax records to keep track of income and expenses. In my opinion, Fakturoid is the best option and can be linked to an e-shop.
    • Assume that if you are starting, you will keep your records yourself and file a tax return at the end of the year.

Tip: It's always better to start a business small, but legally. This way, you avoid potential problems, fines, or retroactive payments. And also nasty comments from colleagues.

5. Marketing, Branding, and Sales

  • E-shop or sales platforms:

    • Your own e-shop can cost a few hundred crowns per month (e.g., renting a Shoptet e-commerce platform), but it requires time for management and also some skill or following instructions.
    • Alternatives include marketplaces like Fler or Etsy, where you pay either an initial listing fee or a commission on sales, and it's quite challenging to keep customers exclusively on your store.
    • For a quick start, you can also use social networks (Facebook, Instagram), but for full-fledged business, it's better to have your own website, as social networks are great for marketing but not as great for sales and order management.
  • Advertising and promotion:

    • If you want to reach more customers, budget for advertising (e.g., Facebook Ads or Instagram Ads). With a smaller budget of CZK 2,000–3,000 per month, you can achieve excellent results initially!
    • Business cards, flyers, a professional logo or design can also help build a brand (a graphic designer charges from CZK 500 to several thousands for a design).

Tip: If you don't want to invest in paid advertising, focus on collaborations with bloggers, influencers, and organic posts on Instagram or FB.

6. Storage and Packaging

  • Material and finished goods storage:

    • Initially, a part of a closet or a small shelf might suffice, but as the quantity of items grows, so does the need for space. And some decent organization. I first used fabric shelves and later shelves from Obi.
    • If you rent a larger workshop, account for rent (depending on the location, from CZK 2,000 to CZK 10,000 per month or more). However, save this expense until you actually have a space crisis. Otherwise, it's just an unnecessary money drain.
  • Order packaging:

    • Envelopes, boxes, fillers, adhesive tapes, stickers – small items that add up. Remember to price them and add their cost to the product price, otherwise they will eat into your margin.
    • Aesthetic, "pretty" packaging (e.g., with a personalized sticker) is appreciated by customers and can be part of your branding. And it will delight them twice as much because they will feel that you care about them.

Tip: Consider how many pieces you want to keep in stock. Children's sizes vary, and producing inventory can be costly if you don't know what will sell best. It's best to create a small collection and pre-sell it first. Gauge interest and then gradually stock what is most in demand.

7. Total Investment: Estimate and Savings Options

  • Minimal launch: If you start at home with a basic machine (approx. CZK 5,000 for a classic machine and CZK 7,000 for an overlock), buy 10 meters of fabric (CZK 3,000), a trade license (CZK 1,000), and handle sales on Facebook or Fler (around CZK 1,000 for fees and minor promotion), you can stay within CZK 16,000 – CZK 20,000. This is a truly "low-cost" option, assuming you do a lot of work manually and without major investments in marketing.

  • More comfortable start: Plan for purchasing a coverstitch machine (from CZK 10,000 upwards), additional fabrics and colors, e-shop solutions (rental approx. CZK 300–1,000 per month), small-scale advertising (CZK 2,000), accounting services (CZK 400). You can easily reach CZK 20,000 – CZK 30,000 and more.

  • Savings opportunities:

    • Buying a used overlock or sewing machine (be careful about condition and reliability) – verify this. However, you cannot deduct this as an expense.
    • Finding wholesale prices and suppliers.
    • Gradual growth: start with a smaller product portfolio to avoid creating too much inventory.

8. Final Advice

  1. Create a financial plan: Even if it's a small project, keep track of material costs, equipment, marketing, and a record of units sold. Definitely don't do anything blindly or without knowing what it will realistically bring you.
  2. Test the market: Start with a few designs and sizes to find out what customers want. Only then should you build up any stock. You might not get it right the first time.
  3. Invest in education: Sewing skills, marketing, pricing – all will pay off in fewer mistakes and higher profits.
  4. Build customer relationships: Quality, reliability, and good communication are key to success.

What's next?

If you want to go deeper, it's worth taking specialized courses like Božena – whether on sewing children's clothing or on how to sell handmade creations. In such courses, you'll learn practical tips that will save you a lot of time and money.

Starting to manufacture and sell children's clothing can be a great hobby and also a path to a desired business, where you combine creativity, the joy of creation, and flexibility in time management. If you manage to set prices, marketing, and product quality well, your original pieces will surely open doors to many satisfied customers. Some will return again and again.

Go for it! Carefully calculate what is realistic for you and start with small steps. Everything can be scaled up gradually until you find your stable position in the market. We're rooting for you!
